Are Your Patent Researchers Certified - They Should Be
by: David Nickelson, Director of Research
As anyone who has sought the services of patent research can attest, the quality of work product being provided in our industry varies widely (much to our dismay, I’ll add). In our meetings with clients we repeatedly hear of the unhappiness with services being provided by existing research firms. Some of the comments are downright shocking and as a practicing professional I’m appalled by what I’ve heard. Simply unacceptable and one reason I chose to join Techson, who puts quality and customer satisfaction above all else.
Fortunately for us, this lack of effort provides an opportunity for firms such as ours, where our research tools such as Limestone, our collaborative methods and communication with clients continues to wow clients with our work. You should ask us to hear from our reference customers.
At many research firms, projects are passed down to searchers with little or no experience in the field, let alone with the specific technology at issue. Rarely do attorneys or inventors know the qualifications of the specific individual(s) performing their search services.
In an effort to ameliorate this lack of information, the International Standards Board for Qualified Patent Information Professionals (ISBQPIP) was established, and for the first time is now accepting applications for individuals to be recognized as certified in the field based upon prior experience and qualifications. You can learn more here.
I recently began working with the ISBQPIP as part of the Qualifications and Continued Professional Development Committee and expect that this new venture will help clients evaluating research providers. If you’re in the patent field I encourage you to become associated and help us all better serve out clients by distinguishing the high quality expert search providers from the lower quality ones that give much of our industry a poor reputation.
Here at Techson, our team has decades of experience handling complex research projects for clients in a wide range of technology areas. Give us a call with your search needs and find out how we can help you.
