Patties and Patents, Two Fields With Plenty of Parallels
by: David Nickelson, Director of Research
I’ve previously written about the growing field of alternative food products such as the Impossible Burger made by Impossible Foods in 30 Sliders, 5 Fries, and 4 Large Cherry Cokes and some of the associated intellectual property with such companies in Delving into the “Meat” of Alternative Meat.
While demand and sales for such companies has surged in recent years, their more traditional counterparts in the food product space have lagged. Food giants such as Kraft-Heinz and Nestle have seen their stocks stagnate or get crushed as consumers increasingly move away from their traditional packaged food lines. Even Warren Buffett didn’t see that coming - losing billions earlier this year when their stock plunged.
Nestle Goes Alternative
Better late than never however, Nestle has recently entered the field with a plant based burger of their own. I’m eager to give it a try to see how it stacks up to the other contenders.
A quick perusal of recent Nestle patents and pending applications however shows very little if anything in the meat analogue space, showing again the slow pace with which these larger companies have adapted to consumer demands.
The parallels to our own industry are impossible to miss. Having recently completed our best month ever, it is increasingly clear to us that companies such as our own -highly responsive to our clients and dedicated to providing premier level services- have the advantage over our old and stodgy competitors which provide their clients with poor to mediocre results. Not a week that goes by without us talking to a potential client who is unhappy with their previous search provider.
